How do I know if my forklift battery is bad?

Usually, there are some obvious signs before a forklift battery goes bad, and an experienced repairer can tell based on these signs. When a forklift battery is not charging as usual, you’d better have it checked once.

We all know that forklift batteries have a lifespan and a limited number of cycles of charging and discharging, generally if you just use it for a few years, or your forklift battery has less than 1100 cycles of charging and discharging, I suggest you can repair it instead of replacing it directly.

Signs of forklift batteries that are about to break down

  1. the case has signs of corrosion
  2. There is corrosion on the wiring terminals
  3. there is acid spilled on the outside
  4. smells like rotten eggs
  5. emitting smoke
  6. Slow start response of forklift
  7. Dim or flickering lights

How to solve the above problems

First of all, not all the problems are caused by the battery itself, the dim or flickering lights may be caused by loose wiring. Forklift batteries will have loose cables, wear and tear, corrosion and other phenomena in use, which only requires the operator to check the cable wiring, clean the loose part first and then reconnect it.

If it is not the problem of loose cable

After eliminating the loose wiring problem, if there are still other problems, then it means your forklift battery has more serious problems.

For example, if the forklift battery is smoking, the first step is to disconnect the charging equipment immediately, because a smoking battery may cause an explosion.

If forklift battery terminals are found to be corroded or damaged, then it is usually caused by excessive sulfation or acid leakage, so please find a professional to check the battery. In this case, do not let operators without training and protective equipment to handle it. Acid leakage is caused by excessive water addition, and sulfation is caused by the exposure of sulfuric acid containing substances, both of which cause the surface of the battery to be covered with dangerous substances. Another way is to call, contact the manufacturer by phone and ask if your forklift battery is still safe to use by explaining the situation and if it needs to be returned to the factory.

How to avoid overfilling the water?

As we have already said, overfilling a forklift battery with water is very dangerous and can cause acid leakage. We suggest that when you add water to your forklift battery, you strictly control the amount of water added, which of course is difficult to do when adding water manually.

Our suggestion

We suggest you to equip your forklift battery with an automatic water filling system, which can ensure the safety of the forklift battery during maintenance and extend the service life of the forklift battery.

Forklift battery watering system by LHNY is an intelligent device that can automatically refill a lead-acid battery when it runs out of water. Generally, such a device needs to have at least a smart control module, a water tank, a normal filler valve, and a smart filler valve with a level sensor.
